1/8/18 - 1/12/182/5/2018 This week, we discussed the following: -Essay structure and organization -The purpose of a good thesis statement -How to introduce and explain textual evidence in a literary analysis essay -The reflection portion of a concluding paragraph -The works cited page The rough draft of the literary analysis essay on Of Mice and Men is due on Friday 1/12 by email. During meeting week, students should begin editing their rough drafts into final drafts. I have attached a short guide to help with this. We will have a peer feedback session next week to continue our editing.

1/3/18 - 1/5/181/5/2018 Welcome back! We began this week with an activity on goal setting for the new year. Students responded to the following prompt: Resolutions for the new year:
LINK TO VIDEO Next, we continued working on the prewriting steps for a literary analysis essay on the novel, Of Mice and Men. I handed out an assignment sheet for the rough draft of the essay (attached below). We discussed different aspects of the assignment. Students made progress on the essay steps, and I assisted students in their work. For homework, continue making progress on your essay work. The rough draft of the essay is due by Friday, 1/12.
12/11/17 - 12/15/171/2/2018 In the last week before break, we began our preparation for a literary analysis essay on Of Mice and Men. -With their topics selected from the list attached in last week's post, students began brainstorming and organizing ideas for their essays. -Additionally, students gathered textual evidence (quotes and passages from the novel) to support their ideas. It is important that textual evidence is gathered before beginning a rough draft to ensure that your ideas can be supported by the novel. -I handed out a basic literary analysis essay outline as well as a detailed organizer. The detailed organizer worksheet is optional, but all students must organize their ideas, in some form, before writing. I have attached these worksheets below.
12/4/17 - 12/8/1712/8/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we discussed chapters 4-6 of the novel Of Mice and Men. We also went over the homework packet for these chapters, and students turned in the packet. Students also responded to the following questions, and we discussed them as a class:
11/27/17 - 12/1/1712/5/2017 This week, we covered the following: 1. We went over the homework packet for the novel, Of Mice and Men. 2. We had group discussions and short written pieces related to the plot and themes of the novel. 3. I handed out the homework packet for the rest of the novel. It is attached below and due on 12/5.
11/6/17 - 11/10/17 (and Meeting Week)11/14/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. I collected the final Song Lyrics Analysis project. The final project consisted of the following: -SOAPSTONE worksheet -Says, Means, Matters worksheet -Essay -Poster *If you did not turn in any of these items, please send them to me ASAP. 2. Students then had an opportunity to share out their projects in front of the class for extra credit. 3. Next, I handed out copies of the novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. We will be reading this novel over the next month or so and completing reading activities alongside it. Wednesday: 1. Students worked on an information scavenger hunt to introduce the novel: -On your own, or in groups of up to 4, research and respond to the following questions. You will need to research most of these questions online. There is also some info in the front pages of your book. Even if you are working in a group, I still want you to write your responses on your own paper/document.
Thursday: 1. We began class with a Quickwrite. I then collected all LP 2 Quickwrites. If you have not yet turned in your Quickwrites, please send them to me ASAP. 2. Students continued working on the information scavenger hunt for Of Mice and Men. 3. We discussed student answers to the questions. 4. I handed out the homework packet for meeting week. It is attached below and will be collected on 11/28.
10/30/17 - 11/7/1711/6/2017 Students and Parents,
This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. We began with a quickwrite. 2. I discussed the essay and poster portions of the Song Lyrics analysis project. The poster may be completed digitally as a short slideshow if you prefer. The entire project, including the poster, is due on 11/7. 3. Students continued working on their Lyrics Analysis projects. Wednesday & Thursday: 1. Students took the NWEA Reading and Math tests in my class. Any students who were unable to complete both tests during the class time will finish their testing with their EPs. These tests allow us to measure student understanding and progress in comparison to a student's own previous scores and in comparison to school-wide and state-wide averages. This is not a state standards test, and it does not count for a grade. It does, however, let us know how we can support our students better in their challenging content areas. 10/23/17 - 10/27/1710/27/2017 .Students and Parents,
This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite. 2. I checked off student progress on the Song Lyrics Analysis Project. 3. Students continued working on their projects. Wednesday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite. 2. I showed and explained some model examples of the the worksheet portions of the Lyric Analysis Assignment. 3. Students continued working on their projects. Thursday: 1. I showed and explained a model example of the essay portion of the Lyrics Analysis assignment. 2. Students continued work on the essay portion of the project. The essay portion of the project will be due on 10/31. 10/16/17 - 10/20/1710/20/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. Students submitted their homework from meeting week (see previous post for assignments). 2. We began a song lyrics analysis project (assignment packet attached below). Wednesday: 1. Students continued working on the lyrics analysis project. For the annotation portion of the project, students were directed to copy+paste their lyrics into a Google Document and use the "comments" function in the top right corner to write notes on the song. Students were advised to focus on the specific methods and devices the songwriter used to express his/her meaning. Thursday: 1. Students continued with the lyrics analysis project. By next class, have steps 1-4 from the assignment sheet completed.
9/2/17 - 9/6/1710/6/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite. 2. Students shared their news article assignments with each other and then turned them in. 3. Lastly, students began working on an illustration to accompany the final draft of their personal narratives. The illustration could be done on paper with pens, colored pencils, etc., or it could be done on the computer with an application like Google Drawing. Here are some ideas for the illustration: 1. A self-portrait of you around the time of the experience described in your narrative 2. A scene from your narrative (especially the climax of the story) 3. The setting of your narrative 4. A collage of images related to the events of your narrative Wednesday: 1. Students continued working on the illustrations for their narratives. Thursday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite, and students then turned in their LP 1 quickwrites. 2. Students worked on their illustrations and on editing the rough drafts of their narratives. 3. I handed out the assignment packet for meeting week (attached below).
