1/8/18 - 1/12/182/5/2018 This week, we discussed the following: -Essay structure and organization -Thesis statements -How to include textual evidence in a literary analysis essay -Concluding paragraphs The rough draft of the literary analysis essay on Hatchet is due on Friday 1/12 by email. During meeting week, students should begin editing their rough drafts into final drafts. I have attached a short guide to help with this. We will have a peer feedback session next week to continue our editing.

1/3/18 - 1/5/181/5/2018 Welcome back! We began this week with an activity on goal setting for the new year. Students responded to the following prompt: Resolutions for the new year:
LINK TO VIDEO Next, we continued working on the prewriting steps for a character analysis essay on Brian, the protagonist of the novel, Hatchet. I handed out an assignment sheet for the rough draft of the essay as well as an organizer (attached below). We discussed different aspects of the assignment. Students made progress on the essay steps, and I assisted students in their work. For homework, continue making progress on your essay work. The rough draft of the essay is due by Friday, 1/12.
12/11/17 - 12/15/171/2/2018 In the last week before break: - We reviewed and discussed the end of the novel, Hatchet. - Students submitted the final novel packet (attached in the previous week's post). - We began preparation for a character analysis essay on Brian, the main character of Hatchet. Students began by deciding on Brian's three most important character traits. Students then gathered textual evidence (quotes and passages from the novel) that show Brian expressing these traits (worksheet attached below). When we return from break, we will begin organizing these ideas into paragraphs for the first draft of the essay.
12/4/17 - 12/8/1712/8/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we discussed chapters 6-12 of the novel Hatchet. We also went over the homework packet for these chapters, and students turned in the packet. Students also worked on illustrations of Brian's shelter and surroundings in Hatchet according to the descriptions from the novel. If you did not yet finish your illustration, I will collect it on 12/12. I handed out the final packet to accompany the final chapters of Hatchet. It is attached below and due on 12/12.
11/27/17 - 12/1/1712/5/2017 This week, we covered the following: 1. I collected the final Lyrics Analysis projects. 2. We went over the homework packet for the novel, Hatchet. 3. We wrote some short in-class pieces related to the plot and themes of Hatchet. 4. Students shared out their written pieces from the homework packet. 5. I handed out the homework packet for chapters 6-12. It is attached below and due on 12/5.
11/6/17 - 11/10/17 (and Meeting Week)11/14/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: Students continued working on their Song Lyrics Analysis projects. I checked off student progress on the essay portion of the assignment and assisted students who were still working on their essays. The rest of the class began working on the poster portion of the assignment. Wednesday: Students continued working on their Song Lyrics Analysis projects. The completed project will be collected when we return from break on 11/28. Thursday: 1. We began class with a Quickwrite. I then collected all LP 2 Quickwrites. If you still have not turned yours in to me, send them in ASAP. 2. Next, I handed out and gave an introduction to the novel, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. I also handed out a reading response packet for chapters 1-5 of the novel. You may skip the two writing assignments with X's next to them. This packet is also due on 11/28.
10/30/17 - 11/3/1711/6/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. We began with a quickwrite. 2. I gave out an assignment sheet describing the rest of the Song Lyrics Analysis project (attached below). We discussed the short essay portion of the assignment. The short essay will be due on 11/7. 3. Students continued working on their Lyrics Analysis projects. Wednesday & Thursday: 1. Students took the NWEA Reading and Math tests in my class. Any students who were unable to complete both tests during the class time will finish their testing with their EPs. These tests allow us to measure student understanding and progress in comparison to a student's own previous scores and in comparison to school-wide and state-wide averages. This is not a state standards test, and it does not count for a grade. It does, however, let us know how we can support our students better in their challenging content areas.
10/23/17 - 10/27/1710/27/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite. 2. Students turned in the final drafts of their Personal Narratives. 3. Students continued annotating the lyrics of their chosen song for the Song Lyrics Analysis project. Wednesday: 1. We began with a quickwrite. 2. I introduced students to the next step of the Lyric Analysis project, the SOAPSTONE worksheet (attached below and due 10/31). 3. Students continued working on the project from wherever they left off. Thursday: 1. I introduced the next portion of the of the Lyric Analysis project, the "Says - Means - Matters" chart. For this step, students will be selecting three important quotes from their chosen songs and explaining the meaning and importance of these quotes (attached below and due 10/31). 2. For homework, complete the two attached worksheets. You should also have your annotation finished for your lyrics.
10/16/17 - 10/20/1710/20/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. Students brought in their rough drafts of the Personal Narrative assignment. 2. We had an in-class peer-critique feedback session on the rough drafts. Wednesday: 1. We began a project analyzing song lyrics. The instructions I gave in class are attached below. Thursday: 1. Students continued working on the song lyric analysis project. For the annotation portion of the project, students were directed to copy+paste their lyrics into a Google Document and use the "comments" function in the top right corner to write notes on the song. Students were advised to focus on the specific ways in which the meaning of the song is communicated in the lyrics. 2. For homework, complete the final draft of the Personal Narrative assignment. We will continue with the song lyrics project next week. It is not homework.
10/2/17 - 10/6/1710/6/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite. 2. Students shared their news article assignments with each other and then turned them in. 3. I introduced and explained the Personal Narrative assignment (prompt and organizer attached below). Wednesday: 1. Students began brainstorming and organizing ideas for their Personal Narratives. Thursday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite, and students then turned in their LP 1 quickwrites. 2. Students continued working their Personal Narratives. The rough draft of the narrative is due when we return to school on 10/17.
