Class 39 - 3/12/15 - 3/13/153/18/2015 At the beginning of today's class, I collected the final drafts of your argumentative essays. Next, I gave an introduction to our short story creative writing assignment. Below, I have attached the assignment sheet as well as the prewriting activity (mentioned in the assignment sheet).
Then, in class, we looked at a Ray Bradbury short story and focused on the ways in which he incorporates and develops the basic elements of story telling in his story. Below, you will find the short story and the response/discussion questions that we completed and discussed in class.
For homework over the week of no onsite classes, please complete the first three steps of the short story creative writing assignment. They are as follows:

Class 38 - 3/10/15 - 3/11/153/18/2015 In today's class, we began preparing for our creative writing unit.
We started the class with a quickwrite. The questions were as follows:
As a follow-up to the day's lesson, I posed a few more questions for students to consider:
The only homework from today's class is to continue working on the final drafts of your argumentative essays. The final draft is due next class. I will be returning your freewrites to you next class. Class 37 - 3/5/15 - 3/6/153/17/2015 The rough draft of your argumentative essay was due at the start of today's class. We then had a peer critique session so that students could receive feedback on their papers from several different readers. The peer critique form we used in class is attached below:
After completing the peer critique session, students reflected on what they wanted to improve upon for the final drafts of their essays. For homework, begin editing your rough draft into a final draft. The final draft will be due in one week.
Class 36 - 3/3/15 - 3/4/153/17/2015 Today in class, we had a refresher lesson on MLA format Works Cited pages. I covered the basics of writing a works cited page and referred students, again, to the online template found at Knight Cite. I recommend using this template when citing your sources for your Works Cited page.
http://www.calvin.edu/library/knightcite/ The rest of the period consisted of work time for the argumentative essay rough draft. The rough draft of your paper, including a Works Cited page is due at our next class meeting. Class 35 - 2/26/15 - 2/27/153/17/2015 Today in class, I checked off student progress so far on the argumentative essay assignment.
Then, I gave a refresher lesson on introductory paragraphs: -An introduction should begin with a hook to catch the reader's attention. -Next, give your reader the necessary background information to understand the basics of the issue you are arguing in your paper. -End your intro paragraph with a thesis statement. A thesis in an argumentative essay should state your side in the argument and may also briefly state some of the support for your side on the issue (this support would then be elaborated upon in your body paragraphs). I then gave work time for students to begin their argumentative essay rough drafts. AuthorChris Trompas - English teacher at the Learning Choice Academy in Chula Vista and La Mesa, CA. Archives
