Class 12 - 10/23/14 - 10/24/1410/24/2014 Today in class, we had a peer critique session in which students read and reviewed the essays of two other students and had their own essays read and reviewed by two students.
Over the weekend, please work on developing your rough drafts into final drafts. This means: -Complete a works cited page -Make sure you have in-text citations in your essay whenever you used outside information -Use MLA formatting throughout (see handout from last class) -Clean up any grammatical errors Next class, we will have a work-period during which you can ask me any last questions about your essay. So, come to class with any questions you have ("How do I format a works cited page"? etc.). The actual final draft of your paper is not due until the second class next week. Have a nice weekend. Class 11 - 10/21/14 - 10/22/1410/21/2014 Today in class, we discussed the "Vamping" article and the short film, "The Black Hole," from the homework packet. Next, I handed back the rough drafts of the "Happiness" essays. Based on some common issues I found in the rough drafts, I developed a packet of resources to help with your final drafts. These issues mainly centered around the following: -Using MLA formatting throughout your paper -Properly citing your sources in the text of your essay and in a Works Cited page -Writing strong body paragraphs The following resources were handed out to help you with these issues:
To reiterate, these are resources to help you. They are not assignments. The only homework for tomorrow is to make sure your rough draft is ready to be shared with other students during our peer critique session next class.
Class 10 - 9/9/14 - 9/10/1410/14/2014 Today I collected the rough drafts of your Happiness Essays along with all of the prewriting materials you used (outline, "Happiness" worksheet, and source summaries). Then, we did an in-class write on the short story, "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." This in-class write will be, for most of you, the work sample that I file for Learning Period 1. Lastly, I gave a packet for your week of no onsite classes. The packet is attached below. Enjoy your week!
Class 9 - 10/7/14 - 10/8/1410/7/2014 Today's class consisted of work time for the rough drafts of your "Happiness" essays. The rough draft of the essay is due at the beginning of next class. Please bring your completed rough draft to our next class along with all of the other materials from this writing unit (the "Happiness" worksheet, 5 source summaries, the 5-box essay outline).
Class 8 - 10/2/14 - 10/3/1410/2/2014 Today, we began drafting our introductory paragraphs in class. I gave a short lesson on the purpose of hooks and thesis statements in an intro paragraph. Here is the worksheet we used for our intro paragraphs in class:
Class 7 - 9/30/14 - 10/1/1410/2/2014 Today in class, we researched online to find 2 more sources in addition to the 3 sources that were due in class today. Here is the form we used to compile our sources:
Your homework is to develop a rough outline for your paper with this graphic organizer. Fill in the boxes with ideas and sources you would like to cite in each paragraph:
Next class, we will begin our rough drafts in class.
