9/25/17 - 9/29/179/29/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite activity. 2. Students turned in the rough drafts of their personal narrative writing assignment. 3. We took a break from narrative/descriptive writing with a news article activity. Students chose 1 of 2 articles and completed the attached response questions (attached below). Wednesday: 1. Students finished working on the news article activity. 2. I handed out a "Cross-curricular Article Assignment" (attached below). Thursday: 1. Students researched and began writing their "Cross-curricular Article Assignment." It is due next class on 10/3.

Review of a sample narrative example (attached in packet below) 4. Introduction of Personal Narrative assignment (attached in packet below) 5. Organizer handout given for Personal Narrative prewriting (attached in packet below) Wednesday: 1. Students began brainstorming and working on their Personal Narrative outline Thursday: 1. Quickwrite activity 2. In-class work time for the Personal Narrative assignment (rough draft due 9/26)
9/11/17 - 9/15/179/15/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. In-class peer-critique on the rough draft of the "Descriptive Writing Assignment" (place description) (critique form attached below) Wednesday: 1. In-class time to finish peer critique and/or work on edits and revisions for the final draft. Thursday: 1. We began with a quickwrite (prompt attached below) 2. Discussion of proper dialogue formatting in narrative writing (handout attached below) 3. Dialogue editing group assignment (included with previous handout - due 9/19) 4. For homework, complete the dialogue editing assignment and the final draft of your "Descriptive Writing Assignment." Both assignments will be collected next class. 5. If you did not yet choose your self-selected novel for semester 1, please do so by next class.

Types of writing: informative, argumentative, and narrative. We will be starting with narrative. 4. Discussion of the short story, "The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant," by W.D. Wetherell. 5. Plot chart assignment for "The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant" (attached below). Wednesday: 1. Plot chart review 2. "Elements of a Narrative" Powerpoint presentation (attached below) 3. "Figurative Writing" Powerpoint presentation (attached below) 4. "Show, Don't Tell" info sheet (attached below) 5. "Showing vs. Telling - Practice Exercises" assignment (attached below) Thursday: 1. In-class time to finish "Showing vs. Telling - Practice Exercises" assignment 2. Share-outs of student responses to the practice exercises 3. "Descriptive Writing Assignment" handed out (attached below and due Tuesday 9/12) 4. In addition, choose your "self-selected novel" by Tuesday 9/12 as well.
