We began this week with an activity on goal setting for the new year. Students responded to the following prompt:

Next, we continued working on the prewriting steps for a character analysis essay on Brian, the protagonist of the novel, Hatchet. I handed out an assignment sheet for the rough draft of the essay as well as an organizer (attached below). We discussed different aspects of the assignment. Students made progress on the essay steps, and I assisted students in their work.
For homework, continue making progress on your essay work. The rough draft of the essay is due by Friday, 1/12.
In the last week before break:
- We reviewed and discussed the end of the novel, Hatchet.
- Students submitted the final novel packet (attached in the previous week's post).
- We began preparation for a character analysis essay on Brian, the main character of Hatchet. Students began by deciding on Brian's three most important character traits. Students then gathered textual evidence (quotes and passages from the novel) that show Brian expressing these traits (worksheet attached below). When we return from break, we will begin organizing these ideas into paragraphs for the first draft of the essay.
