9/25/17/ - 9/29/179/29/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. We began class with a quickwrite activity. 2. Students turned in the final drafts of their "Place Description" descriptive writing assignment. 3. We took a break from narrative/descriptive writing with a news article activity. Students chose 1 of 2 articles and completed the attached response questions (attached below). Wednesday: 1. Students finished working on the news article activity. 3. I handed out a "Cross-curricular Article Assignment" (attached below). Thursday: 1. Students researched and began writing their "Cross-curricular Article Assignment." It is due next class on 10/3.

9/18/17 - 9/22/179/22/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. Students brought the rough drafts of their Place Descriptions to class. 2. Students had a peer-critique session to give and receive feedback on their rough drafts (critique form attached below) Wednesday 1. Students finished the peer-critique session and worked on revising their rough drafts. Thursday 1. We began with a quickwrite activity to practice writing dialogue. 2. I gave a short lecture on dialogue formatting followed by an in-class practice activity (attached below). 3. For homework, complete the final draft of the Place Description assignment (due 9/26).
9/11/17 - 9/15/179/15/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. Students shared out their "Showing vs. Telling - Practice Exercises" assignment. 2. We discussed showing vs. telling a bit further with teacher examples. 3. "Descriptive Writing Assignment" handed out (attached below - rough draft due Tues. 9/19) 4. Brainstorming and in-class time to begin the assignment Wednesday and Thursday: 1. In-class work time to continue working on the "Descriptive Writing Assignment" with teacher help available as needed. 2. The rough draft is due next Tuesday.
9/4/17 - 9/8/179/8/2017 Students and Parents, This week, we covered the following: Tuesday: 1. Icebreaker activity 2. Class rules (attached below) 3. Types of writing: informative, argumentative, and narrative. We will be starting with narrative. 4. Discussion of the short story, "Eleven," by Sandra Cisneros. 5. Plot chart assignment for "Eleven" (attached below). Wednesday: 1. Plot chart review 2. "Elements of a Narrative" Powerpoint presentation (attached below) 3. "Elements of an Autobiographical Narrative" assignment (attached below) Thursday: 1. In-class time to finish "Elements of an Autobiographical Narrative" assignment 2. "Figurative Writing" Powerpoint presentation (attached below) 3. "Show, Don't Tell" info sheet (attached below) 4. "Showing vs. Telling - Practice Exercises" assignment (attached below and due Tuesday 9/12)
